I see that yo use PS. What I usually do is go into the levels palette and bring the clamp sliders up to the extremes on the graph. This means that your darkest colour will show as black, and your lightest as white. But of course, its up to you the artist!

I'll redo the post work tonight since i'm not 100% satisfied with it. gonna try that out, but usually i use curves.
